The eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 buried Pompeii under a blanket of ash and lapilli. Most of the inhabitants, escaped from the houses, were killed on the coast. The few remaining, hoping to save themselves in the basements of their homes, died asphyxiated. The plaster casts of their bodies in agony are the moving testimony of that tragedy.
